Favours For Sailors – ‘Furious Sons’
Posted in Album Reviews on February 27, 2009
I give you Favours For Sailors – possibly one of the next year’s bright young things! The six tunes that fill this mini-album are a refreshingly churpy burst of new-wave that fuse together slacker indie with all out “Surfin’ USA” era Beach Boys.
Although there’s more to these songs than just a three-minute three-chord bash, they don’t lose any of the fun factor on the way by adding a bit of depth to their work. I put it to you that in a few months time being a fan of Favour For Sailors will be as much fun as being a fan of the Kooks when they first emerged, only this time it won’t cost you all your musical dignity six months down the line.
Songs like ‘The Nihilist Prays’ and ‘Shy Times’ try a bit harder than some of the other tracks on this record, and come out sounding all Pavement and The Cribs, but still sit comfortably amongst their peers. The standout track is “I Dreamt That I Dreamt That You Loved Me In Your Dreams.” Kicking off with a chorus of “Wo-Woahs,” it borrows from all the best parts of indiedom and blends them into four minutes of irresistible jangly powerpop, before returning to a slightly louder chorus of “Wo-Woahs”. Sounds simple. It is. All the best things are.
If you’re a music fan, you’ll probably like ‘Furious Sons’. If you’re a music snob, have it as your guilty pleasure.
