Pigeon Detectives – ‘Emergency’

Remember 2007? The sweat, drugs and glowsticks of new rave, along with the glorious mud and rain of the great British summer? Amongst all of that musical wonder was Matt Bowman and his four mates from Leeds Known as The Pigeon Detectives.

The group released their blinding debut called “Wait for me” last year. After touring, and playing every festival known to man, the Detectives are back with a new album 363 days after their debut release. It’s astonishing that Bowman and co could be energized enough to get straight back in the studio, and rumour has it that a third album is already in the pipeline.

So, for all the fans of indie music with hook lines that are sharper than a knifes edge, its a well anticipated album.Rturning with equally memerable lines, such as on “This is an Emergency” and “Don’t wanna find out” the album kicks off to a good start. Bringing in new producer Stephen Street, famous for working with The Smiths, Babyshambles, The courtenners and Blur, the album almost sounds like something My Chemical Romance would produce. The songs on this new creation talk of heartbreak, drunkenness, and broken relationships – much different to the tone of the tunes on “Wait for me”.

However, from the first note of the album to its final song, it all just feels a little contrived. The songs are often over-cooked with guitar solos by lead guitarist Oliver Main. To be frank, it’s like putting Jimi Hendrix on every single Ramones song.

The Pigeon Detectives’ brilliance does shine through on tracks like “You Don’t Need it” and “Love you for a day (Hate you for a week”), but ultimately, it seems this album should have been left in the studio for a couple more months lads.

6/10
